love never dies

/ heart cake via swissmiss /
reuben and i have just booked ourselves a romantic holiday in melbourne in july :) it's only a long weekend during reuben's uni break, but it should be a nice getaway for us and an opportunity to spend some quality time together (insert awww here). melbourne will be cold - why we keep planning cold vacations i don't know - but we've got some fun stuff planned already, including the king tut exhibit at the melbourne museum and dinner and a show. we'll be seeing the long anticipated (by reuben) love never dies, sequel to the phantom of the opera.

that's all we have planned so far. except for shopping, of course. there will be plenty of that :)

this chick gets around

/ white kiwi chick at mt. bruce via doc press release /
ever since i read the press release from the department of conservation last week, this little chick has been popping up everywhere! yahoo news, telegraph wildlife pictures - it's great to see this guy (or girl) in the news. it's especially good for mt. bruce's reputation, which took a bit of a beating last year when they lost several kiwi to predators in the sanctuary. i'm glad things are getting back on the right track for them, and i'm hoping i can go visit sometime soon to see the facility's recent renovations.

order an mri on that feta - stat!

an educational and mouth-watering video about one of my favourite topics - cheese :) found this on brain pickings, a blog i stumbled upon about 2 months ago and have been fascinated by and loving ever since. you should check it out.

big fish

it would be pretty fantastic to be part of an expedition run by a museum like the kermadec expedition run by the auckland museum. at little ol' te manawa yesterday we worked on setting up the huge native fish tank by putting in the gravel, rocks and branches. it is actually so big that the easiest way to decorate was to climb right in! we haven't filled it up with water yet, but i'm hoping the other keeper angela will be able to do that tomorrow so we can get the fish in this week!

rethink what you thought you knew

A-mazing! no really - you must watch this, it's crazy how you take the littlest things for granted.

window shopping

/ mila coat in the window of kilt /

one of my favourite parts of working at te manawa again is my walk home down george street where i can peak in all the wonderful windows. there seems to be a bit of a red theme going on at the moment with red tops and an amazing red coat at kilt and a whole window of red at urban charm.

i rarely go into these stores as they are generally way out of my price range, but window shopping can be just as fun :)

pharmasea

it's been pretty interesting learning about all of the fish at te manawa. i'm still pretty bad at identifying the tropical fish, but luckily no one asks me about them since i work after hours! however, tomorrow i have to give a talk to a group of kids - fingers crossed everyone is more interested in the cave weta.

speaking of cave weta, i've got some research to do - anybody know about any studies on the light spectrum sensitivity of cave dwelling insects? yeah, me neither. here i come google scholar! it's been a long time, old friend.

green carpet

/ jill, miriam and i on the reel earth gala green carpet /

last night i volunteered to at the reel earth environmental film festival's awards gala at the regent - the best part of which was the green grass carpet. our job was to hold big bird-shaped paper lanterns on the sides of the carpet and have them 'flying' around as people walked in the entrance. it was good fun and everyone seemed to enjoy the spectacle. i hope we get a pic in the paper :)

/ see the films on the reel earth website /

i saw a few good (and one really not so good) films at the sessions where i was an usher, my favourite was a short called landscapes at the world's ends. there was no narration, just some excellent footage of the poles. i was pretty happy to hear it won 'best new zealand cinematography'.
