this is actually the same process i go through when i sleep!

you know, one thing i really enjoy about being in the middle of nowhere (aka nz) - a GREAT night sky! not that the day time scenery is all that bad either :) we're looking to go up to lake taupo for easter weekend - talk about picturesque. i hope the warm weather holds out.

alternative remedies

i've been sick for a few days now. nothing serious, but a very annoying head cold nonetheless. a few things are getting me through being sick (in addition to the sudafed, of course).

yummy tea with the healthy power of echinacea:

(so delish i even get reuben to have some to make sure he doesn't get sick, because we all know there's nothing worse than a man with man flu)

served with antibacterial manuka honey:

(manuka honey has a different flavour than the typical clover honey, but it's meant to have lots of healthy benefits)

some essential oils for my raw nose:

(delicious specially blended herb farm oil - rejuvenate. i can't remember exactly what's in it but it's citrus-y and, well, rejuvenating! this is probably the first head cold where my nose isn't killing me!)

and something good to read:

/ see a trailer on the author's website /

(a quick read, emotional, but lovely)

belated st patty's post

/ st patrick's day 2005 in pittsburgh /

i got an email from kathryn today and it reminded me of when i visited her over my spring break in 2005. i've never been a big st. patty's person, probably because i don't really like large quantities of beer and i rarely own any green clothing. in fact, in 2005 i rarely owned anything that wasn't red, as my vintage red leather with black faux fur coat in the picture above demonstrates (i was also wearing red plaid pants). but since i was visiting kat, and there wasn't a whole lot to do in pittsburgh, we went to whatever town square/park that was holding a giant party and joined the celebration. in the snow. you can tell i love kathryn dearly as there are few people in the world for whom i would spend hours outside in the cold and snow, drinking beer.

starting my birtday wishlist

/ calendar wall sticker by ferm living /

as my birthday is in less than a month i can start making additions to my wishlist :) the calendar wall sticker is probably too expensive to realistically show up in a box for me, but i love it nonetheless. also loving the periodic elements wall stickers, but they would be even better if they had my favourite element (manganese).

kapiti island

/ beach on kapiti island /

on sunday reuben and i went on a trip to kapiti island off the west coast a bit north of wellington. kapiti is a nature reserve managed by doc where several different bird species that are extinct on the mainland are successfully living in predator free bush. our trip was run through forest & bird as you need to have doc permits to even get on the island.

/ view from the top /

we took a boat from the mainland in the morning over the stretch of water between the islands, which is a designated marine reserve. once landed, we had a quick briefing by a ranger and then we were let on our way to climb to the top of the island. when we approached the island i was pretty surprised at how tall and steep it was! and for some reason i thought it was a good idea to take the harder trail up...

/ view over the marine reserve /

and while the hard trail reminded me how unfit i am, it was a really great hike filled with sightings of numerous tui, weka, bellbirds, whiteheads and even some saddlebacks, stitchbirds and kaka. we reached the top in about an hour and a half where several of us enjoyed our lunches and before long a begging weka showed up trying to get food scraps off of us!

/ a begging weka /

an overall fantastic day. today, however, i'm feeling the after effects of an hour and a half of scaling an incline - ouch!

beautiful basil

/ garden cupcakes via gardeninginheels /

gardening has been going quite slowly for a month or so, but i had breakfast with some of the te manawa ladies this weekend and one gave me a takeaway container full of lettuce and cilantro seedlings from her garden. so i cleared out some of the plants that weren't doing so well (like the pumpkins and beans that aston had pretty much eaten all of the leaves off of) and planted the goodies from vicki and tried to keep the cats from chomping on them. i was mostly successful.

and because it's herb awareness week this week, i'm showing my herbs some love and trying to spread them out into some cans i've painted up with a royal blue can of paint i got from the arts recycling centre. the basil i planted in my shoes is doing great, so i'm hoping the ones i've moved into the cans will do better than where they are now too.

hot chocolate and mini marshmallows

/ cozy cocoa by lindysdelights /

the cold snap that started yesterday has really hit me in the face - ugh! time to start pulling out the layers (which i really only JUST packed away) and cuddling down with the cats and cocoa.

/ the brunswick heel (soldout) on modcloth /

luckily i have plenty of cozy couch-based work to keep me busy - wedding planning and (finally) working on submitting my journal articles! in fact, i got an email out of the blue today from an academic publishing company who found out about my thesis and wants to publish it! i have to look into the company and the offer a bit more, but so far it sounds pretty good.

black and red

/ cymbeline paris evening gowns /

yesterday people across the country, including the kids and staff at ross, dressed in black and red in support of those in christchurch that were affected by the earthquake. i also saw today threadless launched a design competition called architecture for humanity to raise funds for rebuilding the city. being one of my all time favourite colour combos, i had plenty of black and red to choose from :)
