buy chocolate, save seahorses

read on the london zoo's website that there's a jumbotron ad up in times square about project seahorse. too bad it won't be there anymore when we visit, but it's good to see conservation issues getting some JUMBO press.

happy halloween

/ curious leopard via telegraph wildlife /

halloween isn't much of holiday here, so we don't have any special plans tonight (that and it's sunday and reuben is studying for an exam tomorrow). i don't necessarily miss the ridiculous hype of most holidays in the states, i do miss some of the silly products and fun events.

p.s. one of the best parts of halloween (other than the candy, of course): the monster mash! it's the hit of the land.

nice to meet you ted

ted talks seem to be all the buzz lately and i just started listening/watching a few and some of them are really quite awesome. i especially liked this one.

nutcracker and new york city

/ kat and i during my last nutcracker /

i've finally booked nutcracker tickets to see nz ballet's nutcracker with mom, AD and reuben's mom. it isn't the traditional nutcracker production, so i'm curious to see whether i'll like it.

and today i printed out a big nyc map so we can start mapping out all of the things we want to see on our US trip, including a lot of food spots, of course :) a few from the list:

lombardi's pizza - an oldie but a goodie

s'mac - all macaroni and cheese all the time

at least one of the food trucks!

aston is a professional flopper. like most cats, he knows exactly where you don't want him to sit and then he sits there:

lost in the web

just catching up with my google reader tonight, which led to dress searching, looking for gardening inspiration, getting more crafting ideas and bookmarking cupcake recipes. i love the internet.

spring greens

/ roof top thrift garden via studio g /

ok, my balcony garden has yet to look as cool as the garden above, but i'm working on it! i took alan to the mitre 10 mega store yesterday for a cup of coffee and we did some plant shopping as well. i picked up some more herbs (oregano, thyme, basil), spring onions and some marigolds to brighten things up a bit this year.

/ balcony with a few new plants /

/ noli loves to eat spring onions so i'm trying to keep them out of her reach /

i think i might take a trip to the arts recycling centre to see what kind of cheap and fun crafting stuff i can find to make my garden a little more fun.

/ arugula /

the garden has already been productive this spring with a pretty decent crop of arugula, which i made into some potato and arugula soup. the last few chili peppers were used to make chili oil, which reuben used this week on some garlic and chili shrimp. it's funny that my chili plant made it all through the winter and now that it's spring, the plant finally looks like it's dying. i did save some seeds last year and one of them germinated, so fingers crossed i can grow another to replace this one.

is it bad...

is it bad that the best hi-low cut wedding dress skirt i've found is in an adam's family photo? hahaha.

frog blog

/ one of my little tadpoles /

everyone at work was so excited about the tadpoles that we decided to start doing a fortnightly frog blog on the te manawa website to keep everyone updated with their progress. check out my first entry here!

note that the inconsistent formatting and missing parenthesis was marketing's fault, not mine. everyone who knows me knows that i wouldn't let that slip :)

symbolic

i finished reading the lost symbol this weekend. finally. after it's been sitting on the bookshelf for something like 6 months! some of it was pretty out there, but it was an entertaining and fast read. i'm looking forward to selecting something else from my backed up stack of reading.

bug hotel

/ beyond the hive london park bug hotel /

i'm on a mission to try to make te manawa more green and since the frogs in the river exhibit are going to require lots of bugs, i've put forward a proposal to get a big compost bin or worm farm as well as a bug hotel. how cool are these london bug hotels?? i'm thinking one in the shape of the te manawa logo would be really neat.

p.s. tadpoles are now in my office - they're so cool! i'll eventually get some proper photos so you can see their shimmery gold skin.

ribbit

/ southern bell frog by andrew blayney /

tomorrow i trek out with andrew (another massey student and our bug and frog consultant at te manawa) to collect southern bell frog tadpoles from tangimoana beach. i'll be raising them in the curatorial office so that we have a group of frogs to go into their new enclosure in the river exhibit. i was getting pretty excited about putting it all together and nearly everyone in the surrounding offices was taking in interest and poking their heads in to ask whether the tadpoles had arrived yet!

so before i left i made sure to put together a good display for everyone at the office :) it will be fun to have some wet little pets.

wellington weekend

went down to wellington yesterday afternoon with miriam and her friends ally and john to see the new zealand opera's macbeth and despite all of the wind and rain, had a nice time out of palmy! the opera was nice, but i think after three operas now have resolved that opera isn't my cup of tea, i'd much rather go to the ballet! i feel like there's something about opera that i just don't get...

/ inside maranui cafe /

but of course, no trip is complete without some delish food :) before the opera we managed to grab a few plates from the sushi train near the theatre. luckily we didn't have much time otherwise i would have eaten a whole lot more. then this morning before we left town we stopped at the maranui surf club cafe for some brunch. the place was swarming with people, in fact there was a line out the door and down the two flights of stairs by the time we left! i had a stack of buttermilk pancakes with stewed rhubard, pears, yogurt and maple syrup, a chai latte and some of miriam's elderflower and rhubard sparkle drink. it was pretty fantastic and had lots of buzzing character, even in the horrible weather.

just a quick shoutout to my platypus girls steph and kate :) i'm really hoping they'll both be able to make it to the engagement party so we can get together again!

concrete jungle where dreams are made of

/ 1950's souvenir map via scouting new york /

reuben, his family and i are all getting very excited about our christmas/nye/nyc trip! reuben and i talk about going to murray's bagels on a daily basis.

/ the esplanade top on modcloth /

there are even a few places that we're hoping to go to that i've never been, like the guggenheim and about a million and one restaurants.

/ book ring via swissmiss /

i'm looking forward to the shopping, of course :) today i bought a cute little skirt in an ancient egyptian print. everyone at work was saying how 70's it is, but i think once i shorten it a bit (it's currently at an awkward length for me) it will look awesome. i'll make sure to take pics, of course.

/ the kapow! boot on modcloth /

and speaking of fun clothes that i need to take a pic of, it's finally warm enough for me to wear the great red jacket that AD got me for graduation - yay!

terminal velocity of cats

/ the new and improved cat scratch centre of entertainment /

this weekend reuben and i finally decided to put the cats' scratching post back together because it seemed like they've been getting a bit bored lately. so we brought it over to reuben's dad's warehouse/workshop and set to work. actually, reuben's dad did a lot of the work, but seeing as he builds things for a living, we were pretty sure whatever he came up with would hold together a lot longer than what we built. we got about halfway finished and i took one of the posts home to cover in twine. it only took 3 hours to twist and glue (!!), but ended up looking great in the end. and as you can see in the picture, they've already been having a fantastic time playing on it. they're so spoiled.

/ aston deciding how he's going to get the leaves out of the bucket /

as it has gotten warmer, i've been collecting water from the shower as it warms up in the morning to water my plants. and this is when i found out that aston kinda likes water. i've had the blue bucket filled up several times and each time he dips his paws in to play with the ripples and catch floating things. i dropped a little piece of cat litter in at one point that sank to the bottom but that didn't deter him! he put both his arms in up to his armpits and played with the piece of litter. i think he would have put his face in too if he could have figured out the whole holding his breath thing. needless to say he got soaking wet but it was so entertaining to watch.

/ i'm gonna get you leaves! /

i read an article recently talking about how cats land more successfully from a fall from 7 stories or higher, and then i was listening to a radiolab podcast today about falling that had a short feature on an article called the terminal velocity of cats. basically it was talking about how after 9 stories, a falling cat has reached its maximum speed and actually spreads out flying squirrel style and then relaxes so that by the time it hits the ground, they often suffer little to no injuries. pretty amazing.

/ why am i suddenly wet?? /

luckily we've put up mesh around our balcony to create something like a catio so we don't have to worry about any falling cats (we're only on the third floor, so they could potentially get quite hurt). currently the most dangerous thing in our house is the laundry - this is aston after he ran straight through the laundry rack and came out on the other side with my underwear.

hilarious.

the national zoo in dc has another kiwi chick and it needs a name - so go vote. i voted for koekoe, meaning 'squeak'. so cute!

cheese please

/ mac 'n cheeseburger via a hamburger today /

macaroni and cheese just isn't a thing that most people eat here. actually, despite being a dairy country, there aren't too many of the delish ooey-gooey cheese dishes here like cheesesteaks , nachos, cheese fries and grilled cheese sandwiches. ok, there is a version of the grilled cheese sandwich, the toastie sandwich, but they have nothing on mom's grilled velveeta cheese and tomato sandwiches.

a long week

/ good morning threadless tshirt /

it's been the usual busy week, but the fire alarm in our building going off at 1:30am only added to the general end of the week exhaustion!

/ squirrel butts do not glow by multiplepersonality /

however, i must say, the longer days and occasionally warmer weather is making me very happy :) i even got to wear the red coat that aunt dogs got me months ago for (what was meant to be my) graduation. actual graduation coming very soon! since we've been very busy, there's not much news other than the sales tax going up and income tax coming down starting today. yes, we have been that boring.
